People with allergies continue to be supported through locally commissioned NHS services. New legislation is also being implemented to support those with food allergies through clearer food labelling.

Most allergy services are commissioned locally through clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). However, to support patients with more complex conditions NHS England and Improvement (NHSE/I) directly commissions some specialised services.

Whilst there is currently no specific National Clinical Director or Speciality Adviser for routine allergy services, NHSE/I keeps the position under review and new National Clinical Directors or Specialty Advisers are appointed as necessary. Clinical advice and leadership on specialised immunology and allergy services are provided by the Clinical Reference Group (CRG). To support the implementation of coherent care pathways, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published guidance on a range of allergy conditions including food allergy in under 19s, anaphylaxis and drug allergy.

Although allergies are very common, most allergic reactions are mild. Occasionally, however, a severe reaction or anaphylactic shock can occur. NHS Digital have confirmed that their data shows finished admission episodes where the primary diagnosis is anaphylaxis between 2011/2012 and 2020/2021 have increased from 3161 to 4359, an increase of 38%. This includes anaphylactic shock due to adverse food reaction, anaphylactic shock due to an unspecified reason, anaphylactic shock due to serum and anaphylactic shock due to adverse effect of correct drug or medicament properly administered. These admissions do not represent the number of patients as a person may have more than one admission within the period. Hospital episode statistics are recorded by financial year and episodes are only included in the data set once they are complete and all clinical information is provided.

The Government recognises the challenges faced by people with allergies and is taking a number of actions to further support them. This includes the introduction of Natasha’s law which will come into force on 1st October 2021. This will make it a legal requirement for all food retailers and operators to display full ingredient and allergen labelling information on every food item they sell pre-packed for direct sale, ensuring that people with allergies are protected appropriately and giving them confidence in the food they buy.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is also developing a communications campaign to convey key messages to improve the safe and effective use of adrenaline autoinjectors (AAIs) in the self-administration setting, including the need to carry two pens at all times. The campaign will aim to raise awareness and scientific understanding among patients, carers and healthcare professionals of the key messages associated with these products. Improved understanding of the rationale underlying the key messages is also likely to improve adherence, especially among healthcare professionals.

Furthermore, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which is funded by the Department of Health and Social care, has awarded £2,371,773 for research into food allergy, over the last 5 years. It is currently funding two trials investigating food allergy using oral immunotherapy treatments, including one which compares two treatments for allergy to cow’s milk in babies and another which seeks to overcome severe allergic reactions to peanuts in adults. The NIHR welcomes funding applications into any aspect of human health, including food allergy.

In terms of relevant training for healthcare professionals, allergy and immunology training remains the responsibility of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) through the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board. A certificate completion of training in allergy and immunology is available to support specialist allergy care. The RCP also runs an accreditation scheme, ‘Improving Quality in Allergy Services’. In addition, the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology also provide training for primary care staff across the country through workshops and educational meetings.

On ITV This Morning a doctor told people how to use an Adrenaline Auto-Injector wrongly, stating it could be used in the arm, chest, or buttock area. Please share this information so hopefully we can repair some of the damage this doctor has caused. People watching the show yesterday may not know this is wrong and could put people’s lives at risk.

Inject the adrenaline into the outer thigh; do no inject in the buttocks area (Injecting into the outer thigh makes it extremely unlikely to damage to nerves and tendons, or that it will accidentally be injected into an artery or vein). The needle is designed to go through clothing if necessary, avoid seams buckles and zips.

A child recently had a reaction to Babyel, this is child is allergic to wheat, so contacted the company several times, but they have not answered the question required about rennet.

Babybel Vegetarian Rennet is made from mushrooms – some mushrooms are grown in hay bales including button mushrooms. Legally Babybel can tell you about the rennet but does not have to tell you how the mushrooms are grown.

26/03/2021 Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) Reflections on the FSA Allergy Symposium 2021

One topic of discussion was Precautionary Allergen Labelling. PAL is meant to indicate where there is a risk of contamination from the unintentional presence of an allergen. This is communicated using several different phrases, the most common being ‘may contain’.

While it is relatively straightforward to determine the ingredients and the allergens in a product, it is much more difficult to say where this type of unintentional contamination might have occurred.

Some thoughts were voiced at the symposium about the lack of consistency in the application of PAL and the difficulty this presents for food hypersensitive consumers who can often feel excluded from enjoying particular foods through over cautious labelling.

We used the day to hear from delegates to better understand how food businesses carry out risk assessments and learn more about consumer perceptions of precautionary statements.

This will feed into a formal stakeholder consultation, planned for the end of 2021 or early 2022, to improve our thinking and inform FSA policy interventions.

Severe allergy

On 9 December 2020, the MHRA issued preliminary guidance on severe allergic reactions after the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine due to early reports of anaphylaxis. Following further detailed review, this advice was amended on 30 December to the current advice. This advice is that people with a previous history of severe allergic reactions to any ingredients of the vaccine should not receive it. People who receive the vaccine should be monitored for at least 15 minutes afterwards.

Widespread use of the vaccine now suggests that severe allergic reactions to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine are very rare and have been reported at a rate between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 doses administered. Similar reporting was seen in the United States with the same vaccine. Anaphylaxis can also be a very rare side effect associated with most other vaccines.

Following very substantial exposure across the UK population, no other new safety concerns have been identified from reports received so far.

Children Consent for research

In the absence of law relating specifically to research, it is commonly assumed that the principle of ‘Gillick competence’ can be applied not only to consent for treatment, but also to consent for research.

A child / young person’s right to give consent is dependent upon their capacity to understand the specific circumstances and details of the research being proposed, which in turn will relate to the complexity of the research itself.

Children and young people’s; competence may well be reflected in their ability or otherwise to understand and assess risk.

Competence to understand will be heavily influenced by how the information is presented to the child or young person, and the language used. You must ensure that you maximise a child / young person’s chances of understanding what is involved in your study.

There are companies that bring food deliveries to your home that are frozen, so that you can remain independent but save you cooking from scratch. These are a brilliant service; this review wants to highlight the problems people have with food allergies.

Introduction letter states dishes to suit different diets and appetites – this sounds good.

States that it has over 350 dishes – at face value sounds good, I will explain further down why I have given this at face value.

Main dietary symbols – at this point only showing gluten free.

Brochure and website showing different information on website – the contradictory information is on meal description and allergen information. This can be dangerous, which is the correct information? If you do not know there are differences in information given, and only use brochure or website as your main ordering preference this could have serious consequences on health.

We all know how hard it is to think what we are going to have for tea and want something you have not had in a while. This brochure gives people with allergies and people with gluten free dietary requirements a limited choice of food.

No one who have allergies or gluten free can buy the multi meal packs, as have mixed meals with allergens or gluten in.

In the brochure is no allergen free foods, there is a short message Free from lists “We can create a bespoke list of dishes, based on your specific allergens or preferences. So please get in touch with your local team and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.” (see photo)

So overall if you have allergies you need to contact directly, but if you are gluten free, you have 19 main meals and 1 pudding.  So, over a year you will have approximately 3 weeks meals before you must start repeating and for pudding, well 1 choice for the whole year.

So, what are your choices? Either be bored with your food or you might have to use more than one company, hoping they have different options.

Overall, yes, it is good they accommodate gluten free but as a company they need to think how bored they would get if had to have the same foods every 3 weeks.  I cannot really comment on the allergen free as you need to contact, but it would be nice to see what sort of options you could have with the message of getting in touch. Just feels like people with allergies is just a small section on a page, so if you ordered the brochure for your allergies, then it is a total waste of paper and not really good for the environment.

207 products on the menu and only 17 allergen free items, yet they are from the extras e.g., sauces, peas so on. Excluding tea and coffee see below for explanation.

People with more than one allergy becomes exceedingly difficult to find something to eat.

This is pre lockdown menu before December 2020, obviously limited menu, being a limited menu unsure if you can ask for the meal to be adapted for your allergies, something you would have to ask.

As the menus are disposable then details for the full ingredients on menu are not available, I would ask for full allergen menu, but the review shows options with disposable menus supplied.

Overall view of the menu, extremely disappointed – beans are on menu in 2 separate places yet 2 different information for the same product e.g., one states mustard allergen yet the other does not but does not say if a different item.  207 products on the menu and only 17 allergen free items, yet they are from the extras e.g., sauces, peas so on.

Allergens vary from 1 (28 items but this includes sides e.g., sauces) – 4 per meal, but meals with 1 allergen are not so common as meal with 3 or 4 allergens.

Their allergen information declaration encourages you to use app, normal declaration of cross contamination and finally “Our staff cannot offer specific advice or recommendations beyond our published allergen communication”.  (see photo)

03/02/2021 The Government’s Healthy Start Vouchers and Waitrose

If you have allergies, there are times you must spend extra for food, Waitrose are topping up vouchers, get more for your vouchers.

Waitrose has today committed to topping-up the value of the Government’s Healthy Start Vouchers, issued to pregnant women and low-income families with children under the age of four, by an additional £1.50 – more than any other supermarket.

From today, customers can present their voucher at a Waitrose checkout, where the supermarket will increase its value from £3.10 to £4.60. The vouchers can be spent on healthy foods, including fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables.

16/01/2021 Allergies and Vegan Claims

People with allergies sometimes buy plant-based foods as they described vegan and should have no milk, crustacean, mollusc, or eggs in, which is good if you are allergic to these.

Because something says it Vegan, please check all the ingredients for your safety. In this country there is no legal term for vegan or vegetarian so claims can be vague or misleading. The Vegan Society states even if a product is registered with them and carries the Vegan Trademark, that trademark does not guarantee suitability for people with allergies.

Take for example

In January 2020, the Advertising Standards Agency investigated ads for Burger King’s “Rebel Whopper” that claimed “plant-based burger” and “100% WHOPPER. NO BEEF”, when the patty was cooked alongside meat products and the finished burger contained egg mayonnaise.

British Food Allergy Awareness believes there should be stiff labelling laws for products that claim to be vegan. This gives clarity for people who are vegan but also the safety for those with allergies.

British Food Allergy Awareness contacted Mars Consumer Care, about a question about a reaction and what was in their flavourings.

Not everybody is allergic only to the 14 Allergens, so having information is important.

Companies like, Mars Wrigley, KFC and Coke Cola are frustrating with their secret recipes. I can understand protecting their product but when health is being affected, there should be a more open policy for information.

I understand the choice is to have or not to have the product upon reading the ingredients before purchasing. The concern is the ability to hide information becomes the normal for other foods, hiding ingredients under the heading of flavourings or colourings, which can limit our choice even more.  People with allergies have far less choice for foods compared to people without allergies, and because of hidden ingredients we maybe avoiding foods when it is unnecessary.  

British Food Allergy Awareness believe there should be availability of full ingredients.

We take consumer safety seriously and understand that people with food allergies have to be very careful about what they eat.  We put allergen information on our packs in line with regulations and highlight the allergens in bold text to help people easily identify ingredients or potential allergen cross-contamination risks.

We know that if you have an acute allergy, you might want more details than the allergen labelling we legally provide.  It’s possible that over time, small changes can be made to our ingredients or processes that wouldn’t change the information we display on pack by law but which could alter any more specific guidance we give.  We recognise the potentially serious consequences of someone eating a food that they are allergic to and can therefore only stand by the information displayed on back of pack.

We use various types of ingredients in our products to achieve the perfect texture and flavour. Unfortunately we can’t give away too many details of our recipe and can only give you ingredient information as is listed on the back of the pack.

Covid has hit us all extremely hard and we all need cheering and people are working hard from home to supplement their income. People on social media selling have been trying to cheer us up by putting an extra gift of sweets with the delivery of our parcels and I can fully understand the sentiment behind this but unfortunately they are putting people at risk and not realising it.

Unless someone in your family or you have a food allergy it does not become second nature to think about the implications of sending sweets to people in parcels.

We are not being picky or ungrateful we just want to stay safe, so asking if you are considering sending an extra gift of sweets maybe it might be worth thinking about these simple suggestions:

  1. If sending sweets please check the back of package that it has no allergens in, you can tell this by the ingredients that no ingredients in bold. (Bold writing on ingredients means they have one or many of the 14 allergens)
  2. Do not send sweets loose and without ingredients as people can not know what the sweets are, and cross contamination can make people seriously ill. 
  3. If you would like to see send sweets please place in a little bag separate from the contents of the parcel, this is because if someone is allergic to the contents it is likely to cross contaminate the item the person has ordered. Cross contamination can even be on the packet from manufacturing.
  4. Finally, something you might consider if you are sending extra treats that you use a disclaimer. Unfortunately you are sending a gift to a household that didn’t ask for it and for any reason someone becomes ill because of these then you can become liable like any other business, this could mean prosecution, compensation or even prison sentence. (The Food Safety Act 1990 – A Guide for Food Businesses) So place the item like said in number 3 and in with a declaration saying along the lines “Please see ingredients before consuming and individuals are responsible themselves if they consume this item.”

This may all seem a lot for a packet of sweets, but food allergies can be life threatening and sending these what seems harmless gifts into people’s households without knowing people’s circumstances can be dangerous.

No one wants to be a killjoy and as said before we fully understand why this is being done and not asking for it to stop but please think about this small article before doing so.

30/10/2020 Why do some products have traces of milk including dark chocolate?

There are several methods to clean a chocolate transfer pipe and it is the manufacturers responsibility to reduce the risk of contamination and safety of the consumer.

Using water cleaning the chocolate transfer pipe does not work especially with chocolate with high cocoa content. If the water encounters the melted chocolate, it can cause it to thicken and then the chocolate becomes unusable and this is expensive for the manufacturer.

Manufacturers can clean the pipes by dismantling the chocolate transfer pipe and manually clean the pipe, this can time consuming and expensive for the manufacturer.

Companies put through another chocolate sweet through to clean the equipment and these are usually sold off as misshapen chocolates

Another way is to use butter, oil, or both to remove the residual within the chocolate transfer pipe.

So due to chocolate sticking to the pipe or methods of cleaning e.g. butter or oil then there is a possibility of trace amounts of milk and hence why manufacturers put on disclaimers on packaging.

10/10/2020 World Mental Health Day and Food Allergies for all age groups.

Initial anxiety with a new diagnosis is normal but it does not stop there, stress and anxiety can affect allergy sufferers daily. Stress and anxiety can affect yourself, a family member, e.g.  a child entering childcare, starting school, going to university, going to a friend’s home, eating out and label reading, new relationships, the list is endless and different for everyone.

Allergy sufferers worry about having allergic reactions and although anaphylaxis has potential to cause death, fatalities are rare and preventable, but living with this can affect your mental health.

When you learn about your food allergy you decrease the risks of an allergic reaction. Food allergies is a part of your everyday life, learn about your food allergy, you will start feeling positive and feel in control.

Tips for combating stress and anxiety.

Make a list of the questions that you have about your food allergies and how to manage them and ask your consultant or doctor these questions. Please ask them all and do not feel that you are taking the doctors or consultants time because this is important for you to know the answers.

There are many voluntary and charity organisations that offer advice, support, plenty of online information (please make sure they are reliable) and reputable charities or organisations offer a contact system for your questions or concerns. If you are uncertain who to contact or if a website is reliable ask your doctors surgery if they have a list of charities and voluntary organisations that you can look at that are trusted.

As there are many aspects of your lives that food allergies can affect you use what you have learned and make an plan for managing allergies in various areas of your life, such as school, work, travel, eating out, and family gatherings, parties, holidays.

You will deal with different emotions as routines will change, these emotional can include worry, anger, feel that no one understands, feel alone, fearful. Find someone that you can talk to, a friend a family member or a doctor/consultant, talking to someone can give you relief because sometimes just being listened to and being able to express your worries and concerns is very important.

If the food allergy sufferer is a child they can be affected by stress and anxiety, allow your child to be responsible with your guidance so when growing up the child becomes confident in their food allergies. Teach them to label read, be confident with them about how they can manage situations, talk through their questions.

Find out if there is a local group for food allergies you can join, or maybe because of social distancing groups online, to find about these groups ask your doctor or health visitor.

Food allergy management will become a part of your daily life, you will feel more confident, and less stressed. There will be up and down days and this is natural, but if you feel that the stress and anxiety is affecting your mental health, please contact your doctor and discuss the worries you have.

First job – At work and staying safe with allergies

You have left school, college, university or on work experience and its all exciting, there be a lot of new information to take in but remember your safety.

Your co-workers do they know about your allergy? How your allergy affects you? How to administrate your autoinjector?

Here are a few tips:

Wear medical identity jewellery.

Have an anaphylaxis emergency plan, share it with your management and human resources.

Teach your co-workers how to prevent reactions from happening, the signs of an allergic reaction, and how to use your epinephrine auto-injector.

When work events are being planned, get involved, as helping with planning you can ensure the event is allergy aware.

Always have an auto-injector with you e.g. leaving the workplace for lunch, out of on a job for the company, change of uniform or office.

Find out if there is an allergy policy at your company? If they do not or if they have one that is outdated, try giving suggestions on a new policy e.g. designated eating and kitchen areas, and labelling of products brought for staff parties or events.

06/010/2020 Vending machines drinks pose allergen risks

I personally do not drink from these machines because of the potential cross contamination, but there has been a many a time been at hospital late at night and there is a hot drinks machine I cannot use. Also, vending machines for food that you cannot read the ingredients, or you know that everything inside it you cannot have because of allergens.

It would be so lovely that the vending machine companies started thinking out the box for those who have allergies.

This could be done by QR codes on the side of the machine for products in the machine so people can read the ingredients, or supply allergen free products.

For you or your guests here is somethings to think about.

Maybe it is a wedding, a party, a cake, sandwiches or even desserts there may be a time that you want to use a small home business for your catering needs. You can find home based catering businesses on advertising sites, local adverts, word of mouth or social media easily enough but unfortunately some small businesses are trading illegally and could be protentiously dangerous for you and your guests. The companies that are not registered with their local authority has not been checked for hygiene or safety and this could lead to food poisoning or even potentially dangerous for people with allergies.

If registered with local authority

Check their food hygiene rating

Ask about their allergy management

Traceability of ingredients used

The company is providing food allergen information before purchase and when food is delivered

Do they use ingredients list and use by dates?

What are their processes for avoiding the risk of cross-contamination in the kitchen during food preparation?

If you do not like the responses or do not feel safe with the menu options available, move on to the next caterer.

Some of our yogurts and desserts are produced at a manufacturing site that handles nuts, depending on the size and type of the products.
However, to give you a more accurate response, may I ask you which product are you referring to? Although some of the sites handle nuts, please rest assured that all of them are GFSI Certified. They all have strict, validated and verified procedures in place to avoid any nuts from getting into our products, and the products are routinely tested for allergens.

I had a discussion with somene about traces of milk in vegan foods, they were saying because it says its vegan it has to by law no animal products in – unfortunately thats not true – the photo below is a screen shot taken from the Food Standards Agency explains – so please if you have an allergy do not presume its vegan its safe. Always check for traces and may contain statments, stay safe.

04/09/2020 Educating people about food allergies.

  1. People without allergies sometimes finds it difficult to understand and this could be a new concept to them, so be patient. When talking to people about allergies find a time that you have their full attention.
  2. Give the most important information and keep language simple, do this in a calm manner but explain how serious food allergies are.
  3. You might have to explain more than once, you have had time to get use to your allergy and it’s a lot of information to give someone in one go, Allow the person to ask questions, they might ask questions about information you might not of given them or they might just want to reclarify. 
  4. Be careful how you explain to people as you do not want to come over that you feel uncomfortable being in their presence or leaving a child in their presence.
  5. If talking about your child’s allergies to another adult let your child be involved. The reason for this is dual fold it helps your child to be able to communicate while doing this it will give them confidence but also, they learn about their allergies, so they become responsible about them as well.
  6. If you feel that you can not explain properly or that you feel what you have said has not been understood, why not use resources for them to read? You can ask your doctors surgery for leaflets so you can give them to people or direct them to a trusted website so the person can take their time to learn instead of rushing which could lead to mistakes.
  7. If you are leaving your child with a babysitter, family, a friends house always take with them an Allergy Action Plan*, Anaphylaxis symptoms*, instructions on how to you Auto Injector and a list of foods that your child needs to avoid. (*see links on Anaphylaxis page).
  8. If having a meal with people or leaving a child with people who are going to feed them, explain about cross contamination and food label reading.
  9. If you have a trainer Auto Injector take it with you so you can show how it works, some people feel more relaxed being shown than being told how to use it. (see links on Adrenaline Auto-Injectors page for the 3 companies of auto injectors, each company on their website will send a free training auto injector to you)
  10. If the person you have asked to look after your child doesn’t feel comfortable do not be offended it’s a big responsibility you are asking them to do and would be better for the person to say no or not yet then your child being put in a vulnerable position. Also, if you feel unsafe or you feel the person who is going to look after your child needs more time then make alternative arrangements.

This list is not extensive, so planning is vital for yourself or a child and it must be taken seriously.

This information is given a guideline and it is the responsibility of the individual for their own, the carer of a child or their own child’s safety.  If you need more information, please speak to your doctors or consultant to guide you.

You just found out you are allergic to a food allergen everything has become daunting; your head is all over the place and life has change dramatically.

This information is for you to think about cross contamination and areas you can reduce the chances of cross contamination and give to your family and friends so when visiting they can be aware too.

When I became anaphylaxis I bought a lot of new equipment so started from fresh, I understand not everyone can afford to do this or the space to do this but think about the areas of potential cross contamination for you and think how you can adapt to keep you safer.

The home is an ideal situation for the whole family to learn about cross contamination and labelling reading in a controllable environment.

If you are the only person with allergies in a household, it can be exceedingly difficult to eradicate the allergen from the household, here are some ideas for you to think about:

Fridge- Try separate shelves or if possible, a separate fridge.

Toaster – Separate toaster or tin foil on grill pan for the grill.

Straws – Do not share straws.

Cutlery – Do not share cutlery.

Spoons – Use separate spoons when making drinks e.g. tea coffee.

Freezer – Keep separate shelves or areas.

Cupboards – Keep separate cupboards or shelves.

Sharing – Do eat off someone else plate, you can not be sure that the food has been checked for allergens unlike yours.

Cups and glasses – Do not share drinks, although the drink might be ok, the person who drank from it might had something beforehand and transferred through salvia.

Wooden spoons – Either buy new or stop using, wooden spoons absorb moisture and retains it.

Breadboards- Have separate breadboards and consider getting rid of the wooden board as can retain allergens.

Saucepans- Either have your own separate saucepans or do not allow allergen in the pans you are using.

Baking trays- The best way around this is to use tin foil and change on cooking.

Washing hands – In a house of multiple people and you are the only one with a allergy it may be difficult to eradicate the allergen completely out of the household, so hand washing after touching food or fluids is very important. When buying handwash but an antibacterial wash would be best but please look at the label as there could be hidden allergens e.g. nut (Macadamia) or milk (cream).

Spillages- Always wash your hands after a spillage and antibacterial the area, soap, and hot water.

Dish Clothes – Buy dish clothes you can wash regularly and us antibacterial wipes or have separate clothes, but this can be difficult to keep track on.

Bath Towels- Have your own bath towels and do not share with family members as body wash and showers gels can include allergens.

Drying up towels- If possible, air dry or otherwise as all the washing up is done together it would be wise to have several drying up towels so they can go into the wash straightaway.

Containers – If using containers for storing food use separate containers from the rest of household. Buy new containers if possible and not reuse e.g. allergic to milk do not old ice cream tub.

Utensils – Use separate utensils.

Cooker – If you are cooking for yourself something different from the family use different parts of the oven when possible while cooking e.g. if allergic to dairy cooking a pizza in same oven as your meal will cause airborne protein to be present around your food. Also. Be aware of cooking splatters.

Kissing – Always be aware what your partner has eaten because of transference.

Rubbish – If you got the job of putting the rubbish out it comes naturally to wash your hands afterwards, but it would be duel fold now not just for germs but also allergens.

Breastfeeding – If you are breastfeeding and the child has an allergy be aware of what you eat will pass onto your baby.

Pets – Can transfer allergens through salvia, so pet food, tablets, medication, flea, and worm treatments would need to be checked for allergens.

Makeup – Mother to daughter for example in the household do not share makeup. Also, makeup can contain milk and nuts so check with manufacturer for ingredients.

Food – Do not pick an allergen out of food as this will not be safe.

Napkins and Kitchen towel – Do not share these.

Preparing food – If more than one person involved in cooking a meal ask all people to wash their hand and be aware of your allergies.

Smaller portions – Remember to keep label with smaller portions or leftovers for future reference.

Toothpaste – Be aware toothpaste can have allergens in e.g. Recaldent is milk-derived, also Casein phosphopeptides are derived from milk casein (a milk protein).

Aprons – If you wear a cloth apron then wash regularly

Oven gloves – Please remember oven gloves will have food residue on, either have separate oven gloves or wash oven gloves regularly.

Cooking food – I possible prepare and cook the food of the person with allergies first and cover while preparing rest of the family.

Microwave- Clean microwave after every use even if it does not look dirty, the steam and cooking can cause airborne allergens.

Finally, this list is not exhaustive if you have a reaction and you have counted out eating an allergen, then keep a diary of what you were doing every time you have a reaction. Put as much detail as you can on each entry as this will help for you to see pattern where the cross contamination is happening.

People with allergies might come over as asking too many questions or they seem to undermine your food knowledge, they are just being over cautious please let me explain.

When new to an allergy that you have anaphylaxis symptoms to, we face the stress of knowing that food you eat can potentially be life threatening and we also have the stress of becoming a food label watcher. Food label watching is dual fold, ingredients on a label can change without notice so this is potentially dangerous but also there so many names for an allergen let’s take milk, below is a list not complete and may change of different names of milk or products with milk in.

Labelling must declare milk in bold but when ordering food for example from a Chinese Takeaway language can be a barrier and this is where problems occur.

When I was new to allergies I asked staff at a Kebab shop if a Doner kebab contained milk, they replied no, I had a reaction the Doner Kebab it contained yoghurt which is milk based but because of language barriers and training issues this become a serious incident.

So, when we ask so many questions please do not be offended, we are putting our health in your hands.

EU law Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 defines a food business as:Regulation (EC) No 178/2002, Article 2 (2)‘Food Business’ means any undertaking, whether for profit or not and whether public or private, carrying out any of the activities related to any stage of production, processing and distribution of food.This means even if you are only selling a little bit of food for a short period, you are still considered a food business. As a food business you will be required to register those food-related operations or activities. You can register as a food business on Gov.uk or by contacting your local authority.

When customers with allergies come into a catering establishment to eat whether to eat in or take away it is incredibly stressful for them. I can understand from the catering establishment it is challenging and sometimes we come across as we are questioning everything. We appreciate that you are trained in these areas, we live with our life-threatening condition daily and even we make mistakes. Last month I made a mistake with cross contamination I got passed the anaphylactic symptoms ok but was kept in hospital with chest pains as thought I was having an allergic reaction induced heart attack.
Please be patient with us, we are trusting you and just want to be confident enough to be able to have something to eat without stress. Thank you

How many times have you gone to buy something, and the staff have put a reduced sticker over the ingredients?

This is not acceptable, please talk to management.

If you supply food on an occasional and small-scale basis, it is unlikely you will need to register.

You may need to register with your local authority as a food business if you provide food on a regular and organised basis.

Allergen information

If your activity does not need to be registered as a food business, you don’t have to provide

information for consumers about allergens present in the food as ingredients. However, we recommend that you do so as best practice.

Very small amounts of some allergens, such as nuts, can cause adverse reactions in people with food allergies, including potentially fatal anaphylactic shock. It is therefore important that food products are clearly labelled and adhere to industry guidelines to ensure that consumers can make informed decisions when purchasing foods that might contain allergenic ingredients.

Ingredient lists

The new EU FIC requirements mean allergenic ingredients need to be clearly emphasised within the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed in descending order of their weight, with the largest ingredient first. If an ingredient is mentioned in the name (such as chicken in chicken pie), is depicted on the label, or is usually associated with the food (as lamb is with shepherd’s pie), the amount contained in the food will be given as a percentage.

Where an ingredient is made up of other ingredients (compound ingredients), with a few exceptions, these must also be declared in the ingredients list.

Allergy advice box

The use of “allergy advice boxes” to repeat mandatory information on allergenic ingredients is not permitted under the EU FIC. All allergenic ingredients contained in a prepacked product should be listed clearly within the ingredients list.

There will be a period of time where you may see the old and new style allergy advice statements.

May contain

Some food manufacturers also use voluntary labelling to indicate the possible accidental presence of an allergen in a food – using phrases such as ‘may contain nuts’. The Food Standards Agency has produced guidance for the industry on allergen control. This includes advice on how to decide if such advisory labelling is needed and the wording to be used.

‘Gluten free’ or ‘very low gluten’ claims

About 1% of people in the UK have Coeliac disease which is a life-long autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own tissues, such as the lining of the stomach, when gluten is consumed. People with coeliac disease need to avoid foods that contain gluten to prevent potentially serious health effects. This means labelling claims about gluten in foods are very important. Foods that contain gluten include wheat, rye and barley.

The European Commission compositional and labelling standards (Commission Regulation (EC) No. 41/2009) establish levels of gluten for foods that makes a claim to be either ‘gluten-free’ or ‘very low gluten’. These levels are:

‘gluten-free’ – 20 parts or less of gluten per million.

‘very low gluten’ – 100 parts or less of gluten per million. However, only foods with cereal ingredients that have been specially processed to remove the gluten may make a ‘very low gluten’ claim.

Manufacturers can only use the phrase ‘gluten-free’ if they can demonstrate that, when tested, their product is 20 parts or less of gluten per million. They will also be required to demonstrate that any products claiming to be ‘very low gluten’ comply to the legislation.

Manufacturers producing foods with no deliberate gluten containing ingredients, but due to the high risk of gluten cross-contamination, will be unable to label foods as ‘gluten-free’ or ‘very low gluten’. However, if steps have been taken to control gluten cross-contamination, these manufacturers may be able to indicate which foods do not contain gluten-containing ingredients. This allows people with coeliac disease to make informed choices about the food they eat based on their individual levels of sensitivity.

Allergic reactions can make people extremely ill and can sometimes lead to death. However, there is no cure for food allergy. The only way someone can avoid getting ill is to make sure they do not eat the foods they are allergic to. If you work with food, it is important to take food allergy seriously. With the new Food Information Regulations rules, you have a legal responsibility to provide the correct allergen information about the ingredients that is in the food you make or serve, to your customer.

How to provide this information

Details of these allergens will have to be listed clearly in an obvious place such as:

●● chalkboard

●● information pack

If it is not provided upfront, you will need to signpost to where it could be obtained, either in written or oral formats.

14/07/2020 Did you know the law for selling food from home on social media?

You are responsible for making sure that the food you sell or supply is safe and meets all applicable legal requirements. Under EU law Regulation (EC) No 178/2002, you must ensure that:

• the food you sell or supply is safe (it is fit for human consumption and not injurious to health)

• you are able to identify the businesses from whom you have obtained food, ingredients or food-producing animals and the businesses you have supplied with products. You must be able to produce this information on demand. This is known as traceability.

• unsafe food is withdrawn from sale or recalled from consumers if it has already been sold. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and local authority must be notified.

• labelling, advertising and presentation of food do not mislead consumers.

Under the Food Information Regulations (2014) businesses have a responsibility to ensure food is labelled correctly. (including the 14 allergens)

Food delivery and takeaway food, if food is sold online or by phone through distance selling, allergen information must be providedat two stages in the order process.You must provide allergen information:

before the purchase of the food is completed – this can be in writing (on a website,catalogue or menu) or orally (by phone)

when the food is delivered – this can be in writing (allergen stickers on food or an enclosedcopy of a menu) or orally (by phone).

Allergen information should be available to a customer in written form at a point between acustomer placing the order and taking delivery of it.Takeaway meals should be labelled clearly so customers know which dishes are suitable forthose with an allergy.
